डुण्डुभ उवाच सखा बभूव मे पूर्वं खगमो नाम वै द्विजः भृशं संशितवाक्तात तपोबलसमन्वितः

The dundubha said: "In times long past, I had a Brāhmaṇa friend named Khagama. He was truthful in his words and possessed powers through his austerities.

दुंदुभा ने कहा: "काफी समय पहले, मेरे पास खगामा नाम का एक ब्राह्मण मित्र था। वह अपने शब्दों में सच्चा था और अपनी तपस्या के माध्यम से उसके पास शक्तियां थीं।

When he regained consciousness, that truthful ascetic, rigid in his vows, told me in great anger,

"Since you created a powerless mock snake to frighten me, you will yourself turn into a powerless snake through my curse."

O ascetic! I knew the power of his austerities. Therefore, very agitated in my heart, I told him,

"मैं यहां खड़ा हूं, आपके सामने झुक रहा हूं और हाथ जोड़कर आपको सलाम कर रहा हूं। चूंकि मैं आपका दोस्त हूं, इसलिए मैंने यह सिर्फ आपको हंसाने के लिए किया है।"

O Brāhmaṇa! You should forgive me and take back your curse. Seeing that my mind was thus agitated,

the ascetic was moved and breathing hot and hard, he said, 'What I have said must come to paś-s.

तपस्वी द्रवित हो गया और गर्म तथा कठिन साँस लेते हुए उसने कहा, 'मैंने जो कहा है वह पाश पर आना ही चाहिए।

यत्तु वक्ष्यामि ते वाक्यं शृणु तन्मे धृतव्रत श्रुत्वा च हृदि ते वाक्यमिदमस्तु तपोधन

But, O ascetic! Since you are always rigid in your austerities and unwavering from your rites, hear what I have to say and hold it close to your heart.

परन्तु हे तपस्वी! चूँकि आप सदैव अपनी तपस्या में दृढ़ रहते हैं और अपने संस्कारों से अटल रहते हैं, इसलिए मुझे जो कहना है उसे सुनें और इसे अपने हृदय में रखें।

उत्पत्स्यति रुरुर्नाम प्रमतेरात्मजः शुचिः तं दृष्ट्वा शापमोक्षस्ते भविता नचिरादिव

When Pramati's son, the pure Ruru appears, you will be immediately freed from the curse on seeing him.

जब प्रमति का पुत्र शुद्ध रुरु प्रकट होगा, तो उसे देखकर तुम तुरंत शाप से मुक्त हो जाओगे।

स त्वं रुरुरिति ख्यातः प्रमतेरात्मजः शुचिः स्वरूपं प्रतिलभ्याहमद्य वक्ष्यामि ते हितम्

You are that Ruru, the son of Pramati. Regaining my form, I will tell you something for your benefit. '"O best of beings!

अहिंसा परमो धर्मः सर्वप्राणभृतां स्मृतः तस्मात्प्राणभृतः सर्वान्न हिंस्याद्ब्राह्मणः क्वचित्

The righteous path is non-violence and that of not destroying life. Therefore, a Brāhmaṇa should never take the life of any living creature.

धर्म का मार्ग अहिंसा है और जीवन को नष्ट न करना है। इसलिए, ब्राह्मण को कभी भी किसी जीवित प्राणी का जीवन नहीं लेना चाहिए।

ब्राह्मणः सौम्य एवेह जायतेति परा श्रुतिः वेदवेदाङ्गवित्तात सर्वभूताभयप्रदः

The sacred texts say that a Brāhmaṇa should always be peaceful, learned in the Veda-s and the Vedāṅga-s,

अहिंसा सत्यवचनं क्षमा चेति विनिश्चितम् ब्राह्मणस्य परो धर्मो वेदानां धरणादपि

should make all creatures fearless and should be non-violent, truthful and forgiving. The supreme duty of Brāhmana-s is to retain the knowledge of the Veda-s.

सभी प्राणियों को निर्भय बनाना चाहिए तथा अहिंसक, सत्यवादी तथा क्षमाशील होना चाहिए। ब्राह्मणों का सर्वोच्च कर्तव्य वेदों का ज्ञान बनाए रखना है।

क्षत्रियस्य तु यो धर्मः स नेहेष्यति वै तव दण्डधारणमुग्रत्वं प्रजानां परिपालनम्

The duty of the Kṣatriya-s is not meant for you. To hold up the rod of punishment, to rule over and protect subjects,

क्षत्रियों का कर्तव्य तुम्हारे लिए नहीं है। दण्ड की छड़ी थामे रखना, प्रजा पर शासन करना और उसकी रक्षा करना,

तदिदं क्षत्रियस्यासीत्कर्म वै शृणु मे रुरो जनमेजयस्य धर्मात्मन्सर्पाणां हिंसनं पुरा

these are the natural duties of Kṣatriya-s. O Ruru! Listen to me. In days gone by, the snakes were destroyed in Janamejaya's sacrifice.

ये क्षत्रियों के स्वाभाविक कर्तव्य हैं। हे रुरु! मेरी बात सुनो। पिछले दिनों जनमेजय के यज्ञ में साँप नष्ट हो गये थे।

परित्राणं च भीतानां सर्पाणां ब्राह्मणादपि तपोवीर्यबलोपेताद्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगात् आस्तीकाद्द्विजमुख्याद्वै सर्पसत्रे द्विजोत्तम

But the frightened snakes were saved by a Brāhmaṇa at the snake-sacrifice. O supreme among the Brāhmaṇas! This was Āstīka, chief among the Brāhmaṇas, powerful in his austerities, brave, strong and learned in the Veda-s."

लेकिन भयभीत साँपों को एक ब्राह्मण ने सर्प-यज्ञ में बचा लिया। हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! यह आस्तिक था, ब्राह्मणों में प्रमुख, अपनी तपस्या में शक्तिशाली, बहादुर, मजबूत और वेदों का विद्वान।"
